Who is Phyllis Morris?
Phyllis Morris began her design career in 1953 in Los Angeles, California by creating the “Poodle Lamp,”a sculpture of her own poodle topped with a little flared shade. Within months she was casting them by
the dozens and personally delivering them to clients in her pink convertible Cadillac.
It wasn’t long before she was designing more original lamps, elaborate end tables, gothic throne chairs, unique cabinets and mirrored bars...and eventually her signature canopy beds, which attracted a unique clientele base of celebrities, hotel designers and collectors the world over. Never timid, Phyllis wrote her own rules and refused to follow trends. In the mid-century when the furniture industry was creating slick, streamline furnishings, Phyllis favored bold Italian carvings with rich layered patinas. Unexpected and original designs evolved through the decades and a furniture empire was being built and Phyllis became known as one of the foremost style innovators in the home furnishings industry.
A civic leader, a legendary hostess, an interior designer, a syndicated newspaper columnist and regular television guest on design segments, Phyllis was known for her no-nonsense approach to design,
business, people and life.
Following Phyllis’ untimely passing in 1988, the company has progressed under the leadership of her daughter Jamie Adler. Together with her talented and devoted staff of designers and artisans, Jamie continues to maintain and nurture the family-owned business in the West Hollywood flagship showroom and the nearby Los Angeles factory. Today, Phyllis Morris is known worldwide as one of the foremost manufacturers of custom high-end furnishings.
Jamie, who worked closely with her mother and was educated in design at UCLA, has succeeded in identifying and further establishing the work upon which Phyllis’ claim of importance and legacy are founded. A mother of three, Jamie is a founding member of the Avenues of Art and Design, a unique design district where Phyllis Morris is located, in the heart of West Hollywood. Jamie continues the tradition of making beautiful furniture, together with her husband John Adler who oversees the manufacturing process.
Phyllis Morris. The name is synonymous with originality, enduring style and quality, which is still the hallmark of this fifty-seven-year-old company.
